Our Review of Sexy Fish: March 2023

Cost: ~£450 for three diners

“THE FOOD IS BETTER THAN THE ‘INSTAGRAMMER’S DELIGHT’ REPUTATION WOULD HAVE YOU BELIEVE, JUST DON’T BOTHER WITH THE CHICKEN WINGS”.

For a food bill that came to just shy of £450 for three people, you would rightfully expect a truly memorable dining experience. Sexy Fish is quite possibly the place to take an Instagram picture. It is awash with beautiful, stylish people elegantly adhering to the dress code that prioritises glamour.

The decor is ostentatious and over-the-top, featuring more onyx than you can shake a stick at and seemingly a Frank Gehry on every wall. Series foodies often give places like Sexy Fish a wide berth, fearing a style-over-substance approach. The Guardian review of Sexy Fish was rather disparaging, to say the least.

SEXY FISH MENU

The Sexy Fish menu draws inspiration from a diverse selection of Asian influences. Taking centre-stage is the robata grill, on which a large selection of the meet is cooked.

Come for the food, stay for the drinks. Sexy Fish is home to the world’s largest selection of Japanese whisky, so expect to be spoilt for choice. The cocktail menu delicately balances innovation and tradition, either enjoy one of the classics or try something new; there is something for everyone.

Sexy Croquette

Price: £18.20

Still unsure what qualified these potato and seafood balls to earn the moniker of being sexy, but the croquettes had a well-balanced flavour with a satisfying crunch.

Lobster Half

Price: £39.80

If you were tracking down the best lobster in London, this isn’t it. However, if you are celebrating a special occasion in Sexy Fish and are looking for a centre-piece for the meal, the lobster will make a fine choice. Decent amount of meat, well-presented and thoughtfully seasoned.

Duck Breast

Price: £38.90

One of the better items on the menu. You are told how this meat will be cooked rather than given the choice, but the chef certainly knew best.

Dragon Roll

Price: £19.80

Simply divine. This prawn dragon roll got the seal of approval even from the most ardent of “I don’t like prawns” of diners. The delicate balance of flavour is suprising in a restaurant so garish and over the top.

Chicken Wings

Price: £8.90

Awful. Shouldn’t be on the menu. Flavourless and very little meat. Probably only on the menu to cater for the non-adventurous. Unless they are the only thing on the menu you will eat, you’ll enjoy a much better dish picking from anything else on the menu.

Glazed Pork Belly Skewers

Price: £16.60

Much better than the chicken wings that arrived at the table at the same time. Rather standard affair for a high-end, tasty pork belly dish.

Lamb Rack

Price: £49:60

The priciest dish we selected, but one of the best. Slightly too fatty to get a 5 rating, but beautifully cooked and a suitably melt-in-the-mouth texture.

Desserts

The Sexy Fish dessert menu isn’t massive, and many will be tempted by the visually-impressive dessert platter. We tried the cheesecake, cinnamon doughnuts, ‘sexy’ pavlova and chocolate pot. The cheesecake is your run-of-the-mill nice cheesecake, the doughnuts and chocolate pot are what you’d expect, but the star of the Sexy Fish dessert show was certainly the pavlova. If you only had space for the one dessert, make it this.

Does Sexy Fish have a dress code?

Sexy Fish has a glamorous dress code. Diners are encouraged to dress with personality, purpose and originality. All dress code decisions remain in the discretion of the management. However, the Sexy Fish dress code does not allow for beachwear, logo t-shirts, sportswear, loungewear, shorts, flip flops, track suits, trainers or hats during dinner.During the lunchtime service, certain exceptions are made, such as gentlemen being allowed to wear shorts or sandals.

Is Sexy Fish 18+?

After 9.00pm all Sexy Fish guests must be over 18 years of age. The Sexy FIsh management reserve the right to request proof of age if they deem necessary.

SEXY FISH LOCATIONS

The original Sexy Fish is in arguably the most prime spot in the whole of London, Berkeley Square in Mayfair. Not just any building on this iconic West End garden square either; the Sexy Fair Mayfair address is Berkeley Square House. Sexy Fish has been delighting and wowing diners in Mayfair since first opening their doors in 2015. Sexy Fish’s close neighbours in Mayfair include Amazonico, Bocconcino and Benares.

Following the success of Sexy Fish Mayfair, the opulent spectacle was in high demand on the other side of the pond. Sexy Fish Miami was scheduled to open in September 2020, however this launch was delayed due to the pandemic. Instead, Sexy Fish Miami opened their doors to much fanfare in February 2022. Rumours of a Sexy Fish New York have been persistent, but details and firm commitments still remain thin on the ground.
